July 2 2008
There is one line that you will hear often from the members (hearing or Deaf) of the Deaf community: “It’s a small world!” I had many opportunities to expand the circle of people who I know when I was a student at NTID/RIT with thousands of other Deaf college students, visited friends at [...]

Devil’s Playground - Music: An Aural Sensation, A Visual Pleasure, Part One (2 clicks)
July 2 2008
Music is an art form that appeals to the aural sense [hearing], in the same way that painting, sculpture, photography, writing, et al, appeal to the visual sense [seeing]. Listening to music, for me, is an “either/ or” proposition. If I can hear it, I will listen to it, if I can’t, I won’t bother. The [...]

At The Rim - What makes CI’s effective ? (3 clicks)
July 2 2008
Someone asked recently, what IS the effectiveness of a CI ? To me its relative to so many things. The value of any aid to sound, be it hearing aids, or CI’s or a cupped hand to the ear, is via the individual’s perceptions. Many people get immense gratification from the barest of sound understanding, and are able to use it.Some will complain, the CI or aid hasn’t do...

Filipino Deaf from the Eyes of a Hearing Pers - How successful is cochlear implant? (4 clicks)
July 1 2008
My last post made me think deeper. Are cochlear implants proven to have a high success rate? The reason why I’m having serious doubts is when I was putting sub-titles on the video, I’m having a hard time listening to the speeches made by those two kids who have undergone the implant. So instead of deciphering what he is saying, I simply put [inaudible speech].
